SELECT IMAGE AT LEFT TO ENTER ALBUM THEN CLICK ON INDIVIDUAL PHOTOS TO ENLARGE. EMAIL antiques@midcoast.com with any questions or comments. Provenance:Built by the Smith Machine shop in Leominster, MA. The Smith brothers started their shop in 1873 and made general machine parts for the industry in that area. The engine was made in the shop (sometime after 1873) using a flywheel and perhaps a cylinder casting from Putnam Machine Company. If you compare this engine with the lay shaft Putnam steam engines of the 1875-1880 period (like the engine on display at Henry Ford Museum) you will find the valve gear, lay shaft and cut-off details identical. ANY INFORMATION ON THE SMITH BROTHERS MACHINE SHOP OR THIS ENGINE WOULD BE MUCH APPRECIATED.. MANY THANKS FOR INFORMATION PROVIDED BY A WEST COAST STEAM ENGINE AUTHORITY AND FRIEND.

Presently under restoration/conservation: The Hooven Owens- Rentschler 40 H.P. (Hamilton) Corliss Steam Engine, Hamilton, Ohio was on exhibition at the 1893 Columbian Exhibition. It then was presented to the University Of Maine where it powered the Dynamo Laboratory and was used as a training engine. It was removed from the laboratory in 1966. With its 8 foot dia. flywheel the engine is one of the finest examples of a small Corliss engine. This engine has the rare factory appointment of the "fancy grade" finish. The engine is being restored in memory of the late Francis Coughlin. We are very interested in obtaining any written material or steam gauges by this famous American maker. We are also interested in corresponding with other Hamilton Corliss engine owners. This engine is being restored by Delores Allen and Charles Chiarchiaro.
