Important 1889 Chase
Recording Alarm Compass Electro-Mechanical Navigation Device
This historic landmark navigation device is believed to be the only one built by Henry M. Chase noted Electrician, Boston , Mass. and installed in J.P. Cushing's Steam Yacht Gleam for initial trials. The electro-mechanical recording device is believed to be the first of its kind was built by Chase in response to the tragic sinking of the Savannah and Boston Steamship Co's "City of Columbus" which was lost on a clear winters night in Vineyard sound resulting in the drowning of 101 souls. The disaster was attributed to "reckless steering there being no warning to warn the sleeping captain".
